Golden Ears Dog Walk
Whenever I go home to visit my family in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, the first thing I do is run with my family dog on the dykes on the Pitt River. Pitt Meadows is an hour outside Vancouver, and easy to get to with its new access to the TransCanada Highway, but out on the river, it is still the small town I grew up in. Running on the dykes, you get one of the best views of Golden Ears mountain, and are just as likely to encounter deer and bear tracks as other runners and dog walkers.
For me, this is my Canada. As my hometown grows, the mountains and the river stays the same as it always has: where the river bends the log-booms from the lumber camps still run aground, and everyone you meet has a smile. I've been away a long time now, but this is where I always come back to: my Canada.
