Wilderness for an 8 Year Old
This is a picture of Serpent Mounds, on the north shore of Rice Lake, Ontario. Not only our immediate family, but our extended family would spend summer vacations camping there. Some 40-something years ago, I remember being allowed to roam throughout the park, and would visit this building in Serpent Mounds. It was built over archeological digs showing bones Native Americans who had lived there possibly thousands of years ago. I remember being in awe of this sacred place. Of course nowadays, children no longer have the safety of roaming off on their own, far from their campsites, but I remember the freedom and the joy of spending my days playing on the north shore campground at Rice Lake.
